Vinyl, PVC, SPC and WPC — what’s the difference?

These names overlap because they describe the same family of floors. Vinyl floors are made mainly from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The names describe the core and how the plank is built:

    • Luxury vinyl / PVC planks and tiles — flexible, thinner vinyl, usually glued down or clicked together.
    • SPC (stone plastic composite) — rigid-core vinyl with limestone powder in the core. Very hard and dent-resistant.
    • WPC (wood/plastic composite) — rigid-core vinyl with a foamed core. A little softer and quieter underfoot.

Laminate is different: it has a wood-fiber (HDF) core, so it looks like wood but handles water differently than vinyl.
